Candle care guide.
Soy-wax candles burn cleanly and hold scent well when looked after correctly. These steps apply to all Maison de Lumière candle formats.

Before you light
- Trim the wick to around 5mm before every burn. A trimmed wick gives a cleaner, steadier flame and reduces soot.
- Place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from draughts, soft furnishings, and anything flammable.
- Check the base of the candle is dry and the surface is level before lighting.
The first burn
- Allow a full melt pool to form on the first burn — the wax should reach the edge of the vessel.
- This takes two to three hours depending on the candle width. Extinguishing too early creates a memory ring that affects all future burns.
Ongoing burn guidance
- Burn for a maximum of four hours at a time. Extended burns overheat the vessel and reduce scent performance.
- Allow the candle to cool and fully resolidify before relighting, typically two hours.
- Never burn a candle unattended or while sleeping.
When to stop
- Stop burning when around 10mm of wax remains at the base. Burning past this point can overheat the vessel.
- If the flame becomes very large, flickers excessively, or produces smoke, extinguish and trim the wick before relighting.
Storage
- Store candles away from direct sunlight, humidity, and heat sources — these cause discolouration, surface bloom, or scent loss.
- Keep the dust cover or lid on when not in use.
