Pet Keepsakes: A Guide to Choosing a Remembrance Candle

A pet-inspired soy-wax keepsake can hold the memory of a companion in a form that sits naturally in your home.

A pet-inspired candle is different from a standard scented candle. Its primary purpose is not fragrance, but presence. It sits on a shelf, mantelpiece, or bedside table as a quiet reminder of a companion that shared your home.

The process of commissioning a pet keepsake at Maison de Lumiere mirrors the character of the animal in wax. The shape is chosen to reflect their posture, the colour is matched to their coat, and the size is scaled to feel right in the hand or on the surface where it will live.

We work from photographs. Two or three images showing the animal from different angles are enough to guide the form. We pay attention to the way they held themselves: the curve of a sleeping cat, the alert tilt of a terrier's ears, the gentle slope of a Labrador's back.

Colour is mixed by hand to match the reference. A black Labrador is not just black wax, it is a deep charcoal with subtle warmth in the light. A ginger cat carries tonal variation through the pour. We do not use painted finishes, so the colour runs through the entire piece.

The keepsake is, of course, a candle. But many owners choose never to burn it. That is a decision we respect. If you do choose to burn it, the scent can be chosen to reflect the animal's personality or a favourite walk.

Each pet keepsake is a commission. There is no catalogue of stock shapes. We start from the photograph and build the piece around the animal.
